Sukkur: Regional Director, Provincial Ombudsman Sindh Sukkur, Ahmed Ali Qureshi visited the Central Jail and Reformatory Sukkur, where he reviewed in detail the basic facilities being provided to the prisoners, including their production before courts, medical and residential arrangements, cleanliness, food and other services.
According to handout issued here on Monday, the Regional Director inspected the jail hospital, handicrafts centre, different barracks, cells and admin block along with other sections.
He also reviewed the medical facilities, accommodation, cleanliness, food and other arrangements available for the prisoners and obtained information from the jail administration on various matters.
Qureshi stressed upon the jail administration to take full care of the fundamental rights of the prisoners and to ensure provision of prescribed facilities to them under the Sindh Jail Manual at all costs.
Taking notice of the dilapidated condition of some barracks, he directed the concerned authorities to take immediate steps for necessary repair and maintenance of the barracks.
On the occasion, Superintendent Central Jail and Reformatory Sukkur, Imtiaz Ahmed, gave a detailed briefing to the Regional Director Provincial Ombudsman regarding the administrative affairs of the jail and facilities being provided to the inmates.
He informed that Central Jail Sukkur consists of 32 barracks and 267 cells, where at present a total of 1,704 prisoners are lodged, including 173 high-risk prisoners.
He said that 8 meeting booths have been established for meetings of prisoners, while jail hospital, school, handicrafts centre and other essential facilities are being provided in accordance with the Sindh Jail Manual.
Regional Director Provincial Ombudsman directed the jail administration to make arrangements regarding welfare, health, cleanliness and other basic needs of prisoners more effective and to take timely measures for redressal of any genuine complaint.
At the end of the visit, he announced to provide books for the preparation of competitive examinations for the youth imprisoned in Central Jail Sukkur and also planted a sapling in the premises of the jail as a memorial.
