Hyderabad: The University of Sindh on Thursday launched a plantation drive as part of its Independence Day celebrations, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Mari (TI) announcing that a series of commemorative events would continue until August 14 to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.
Speaking after inaugurating the plantation campaign at Agha Taj Muhammad Park in the Sindh University Residential Colony, the Vice-Chancellor said that planting trees was not merely a ceremonial activity but a practical commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
He said the Independence Day celebrations should inspire citizens to contribute to the country’s progress through positive actions, adding that a greener Pakistan was essential for a healthier and more prosperous future.
Dr Mari said the saplings planted in the public park today would, in the years ahead, grow into trees that would make the environment greener, healthier and more pleasant for residents. He emphasized that everyone who planted a sapling had a moral responsibility to nurture and protect it until it became a mature tree.
‘The true spirit of independence lies in serving the nation with dedication and safeguarding its natural resources, ‘ he said.
The Vice-Chancellor urged students, teachers, employees and citizens to actively participate in tree plantation campaigns and said that every tree planted today was an investment in the future generations.
He said climate change posed serious challenges to Pakistan and collective efforts were needed to expand green cover and conserve biodiversity.
Dr Mari also called upon every member of the university community to plant at least one tree during the Independence Day celebrations and added that such initiatives would strengthen both environmental stewardship and national pride.
Sindh University Registrar Sajid Qayoom Memon said that tree plantation reflected the university’s commitment to environmental conservation and social responsibility. He said the administration would continue supporting green initiatives aimed at improving the campus and residential colony. He urged faculty members, employees and students to actively participate in such campaigns and ensure the proper care of the newly planted saplings.
Chairman of the Sindh University Residential Colony Dr Mazhar Ali Abbasi said the plantation drive would enhance the beauty of the residential colony while contributing to a cleaner environment.
Deans of various faculties, directors, chairpersons, Director Bureau of Curriculum, officers, teachers, employees and residents of the Sindh University Residential Colony also attended the plantation ceremony and planted saplings to mark the occasion.
