Suthra Punjab contractor exits Burewala, sanitation operations handed back to administration

District

Burewala:The sanitation contract for Burewala, Mailsi and 19 other tehsils under the Suthra Punjab Programme has been terminated, with sanitation operations being handed back to the district and tehsil administrations, sources said on Wednesday.

Following the contractor’s exit, the administration has started preparations to operate the sanitation system through its own machinery and available resources. Arrangements are also being made for the use and deployment of machinery and other resources previously utilised under the contracted sanitation operation.

The development follows growing public concern over the accumulation of garbage at various points across Burewala. Residents complained of overflowing waste, foul smells and deteriorating sanitary conditions in residential areas, markets and along major roads. In response, the administration has mobilised sanitation workers from across the tehsil for a citywide cleanliness drive, with more than 1,600 workers expected to participate.

The administration has directed supervisory staff to closely monitor the operation and ensure the timely removal and transportation of collected waste from populated areas.

Officials said efforts were underway to restore regular waste collection and improve sanitary conditions, while citizens welcomed the cleanup operation but called for a permanent and effective waste management mechanism to prevent the recurrence of garbage accumulation.
