Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Irrigation, Riaz Khan on Tuesday visited Budhni Nullah, Safia Homes and sections of Hazara Khwani Branch Canal to inspect ongoing dredging and desilting operations being carried out by irrigation department.

Member of the National Assembly Asif Khan, former Deputy Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Mahmood Jan, Chief Engineer, SDO, Executive Engineer (XEN) and other relevant officials accompanied the minister during the visit.

On the occasion, provincial minister was given a briefing on physical and financial progress of the ongoing dredging activities at various locations. The officials informed the minister about current status of the projects, deployment of machinery, available resources and the measures being taken to ensure completion within the stipulated time-frame.

The minister directed concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of cleaning and dredging operations in all nullahs and canals in view of the ongoing monsoon season and to ensure uninterrupted flow of water.

He emphasized that no compromise would be tolerated on pace of the dredging work and directed irrigation department to ensure that all projects are executed in accordance with prescribed standards.

He urged all officers and staff of the Irrigation department to perform their duties with dedication, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Sukkur: A one month Sindhi language teaching course by the Sindhi Language Authority concluded with a certificate ceremony at the Khairpur Arts Council here on Tuesday. Chairman Dr. Sher Mehrani while presided over the event called Sindhi the custodian of the nation’s identity, civilization and heritage, noting the Authority’s efforts to preserve and modernize the language.

He said the course aimed to equip youth and students with correct reading, writing, and speaking skills and urged wider use of Sindhi in homes, schools, offices and social life. Guest speakers included poet Mukhtiar Malik, Dr. Mushtaq Phul, Radio Pakistan Khairpur Station Director Masrat Ali Mangi, and trainer Hubdar Jagirani. All stressed Sindhi’s role as a symbol of cultural identity and praised the initiative. Dr. Phul called such courses the need of the hour to keep younger generations connected to their mother tongue.

Instructor Hubdar Jagirani expressed hope that similar programs would continue for the language’s development. Certificates were awarded to 30 participants who completed the training. Other speakers included Manzoor Khamosh, Zamir Lashari, Professor Mukhtiar Channo, and Taj Sarohi

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry President Muhammad Saleem Memon has expressed serious concerns to the crisis of clean drinking water in Hyderabad city and said that citizens are deprived of water supply for several days or even weeks.

In a statement on Tuesday, Saleem Memon said that water which was being supplied is smelly, muddy, polluted and unfit for human consumption, triggering to serious damage to public health, business activities and small industries.

He said that despite being the second largest city of Sindh, Hyderabad is deprived of basic facilities like clean drinking water.

Saleem said that Continuous water shortage, foul-smelling and contaminated water supply has become the norm in several areas of the city.

He said that the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry has continuously communicated its voice against the poor performance, water shortage and supply of polluted water of the Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation.

The HCSTSI President urged current administration to provide basic facilities like clean water to the citizens and the Sindh government should immediately conduct an impartial audit of the institution’s performance and identify the responsible officers.

President further informed that HCSTSI is also writing to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, highlighting that despite the conversion of WASA into the Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation (HWandSC), the expected improvement has not materialized, and seeking his personal intervention to resolve the crisis.

He demanded the Sindh government, Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation, Commissioner Hyderabad and other concerned institutions to ensure uninterrupted supply of clean water on an emergency basis.
