Peshawar: Advisor to the Chief Minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Agriculture, Muhammad Umair inaugurated the state-of-the-art Geographic Information System (GIS) laboratory established at the Directorate General of Crop Reporting Services in Peshawar.
The newly established GIS lab, equipped with modern technology, is expected to significantly enhance the agricultural sector’s planning and analytical capabilities.
Officials highlighted that the GIS technology will facilitate accurate crop yield estimates, enable detailed analysis of agricultural losses due to climate change, and support better planning for food security in the province.
During his visit, the Advisor inspected the various sections of the laboratory and received a detailed briefing from senior officials on its functions and potential. Among the officials present on the occasion were Director General Agriculture Extension Dr. Naveed, Director Soil and Water Conservation Samiullah, and other relevant officers.
On this occasion, Mian Muhammad Umair also issued directives to further improve the registration process of farmers at the Farmer Model Farm Service Centers. He emphasized the need for effective coordination between agricultural officers and farmers and instructed the authorities to enhance the overall performance and efficiency of these service centers for the benefit of the farming community.
Providing details about the project, Director General Crop Reporting Services Syed Altaf Ahmed Shah informed the Advisor that the GIS lab has been established under the ongoing Food Security Support Project, which is being executed with the technical and financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This project aims to strengthen the province’s capacity for data-driven agricultural management.
Speaking on the occasion, the Advisor on Agriculture stated that the availability of authentic and timely agricultural data would pave the way for better policy formulation and decision-making.
He reiterated that the provincial government is committed to stabilizing and strengthening the agricultural sector through the induction of modern technology and promotion of research, which are vital for ensuring sustainable development and food security in the region.
