Mirpur (ajk): President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Dr. Muhammad Najeeb Naqi has called for intensified international diplomatic efforts to advance a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Talking to a delegation of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), led by Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi, which called on him at Presidence in JK house on Saturday, the president said the internationally recognised dispute could only be resolved by implementing the UN resolutions guaranteeing the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.
The president said Pakistan had continued to extend political, diplomatic and moral support to the Kashmiri people and urged the international community to play its role in securing their right to self-determination promised under the UN resolutions.
Referring to India’s unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, Dr. Naqi said legislation enacted by the Indian Parliament could not alter the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir.
He urged the international community to take note of the human rights situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and support protection of the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.
He called for intensified diplomatic efforts to highlight alleged human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and prolonged detention of political and human rights activists, restrictions on freedom of expression and other reported abuses.
He also urged unhindered access for UN human rights bodies and international observers to assess the situation on the ground.
Dr. Naqi said the United Nations and international organisations should fulfil their legal and moral responsibilities towards the Kashmiri people and press India to implement the relevant UN resolutions for a peaceful settlement of the dispute.
