Hyderabad: Deputy Commissioner Zain-ul-Abedeen Memon chaired a meeting to review preparations for preventing monsoon-related diseases, particularly dengue and malaria as well as the availability of fumigation machinery, equipment, medicines and other necessary resources.
According to a handout issued here on Tuesday, addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner stressed that public awareness was the key to prevent dengue and malaria. He directed the concerned departments to educate citizens about mosquito breeding sites and precautionary measures, particularly during the monsoon season.
He pointed out that stagnant water accumulated for several days in buckets, coolers, drums, flowerpots, refrigerator trays and other concealed places around homes can provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes. He urged citizens to regularly remove standing water and keep their surroundings clean to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
The deputy commissioner also directed the relevant authorities to ensure the correct dosage and chemical formulation of mosquito-control medicines during fumigation activities so that spraying operations remain effective. He said the Hyderabad administration would continue to mobilize all available resources and maintain coordination among relevant departments to address any potential health risks during the monsoon.
He called for an extensive awareness campaign through information centres and social media platforms including Facebook, with the health department and municipal staff playing an active role in disseminating preventive guidance.
DHO Dr. Pir Ghulam Hussain said dengue mosquitoes can breed in clean water that remains stagnant for several days in concealed places inside and around homes. He emphasized that prompt removal of rainwater from residential and public areas was essential to prevent mosquito breeding and urged all departments to adopt a coordinated awareness and prevention strategy.
Director Malaria Dr. Mushtaq highlighted that mosquito breeding can also occur at construction sites and in under-construction buildings, stressing the need for special attention and timely fumigation at such locations.
The meeting was attended by Hyderabad’s TMOs, health department officials and other relevant officers.
