Factory labourer killed in roof collapse

District

Faisalabad: An 18-year-old labourer lost his life after the roof of a room collapsed due to rains at a factory on Jaranwala Road.

Rescue 1122 spokesman said on Sunday that the control room received an emergency call reporting the collapse of a building roof near Lahore Sweets on Jaranwala Road. The rescuers rushed to the spot and immediately launched a rescue operation.

Initial reports indicated that the incident occurred inside Fatima Dyeing Factory where the worn-out roof of a room, comprising T-Rs and girders, caved in due to persistent rainfall.

As a result, an 18-year-old labourer identified as Waleed, son of Muhammad Umar, was trapped beneath the debris and died before getting any medical assistance.

After clearing the rubble, Rescue 1122 personnel recovered the body and shifted it to mortuary for postmortem and completion of necessary formalities, he added.

Rescue 1122 spokesman urged the people to avoid using dilapidated buildings and structurally weak roofs during the rainy season as continuous rainfall could further compromise unsafe structures and lead to tragic accidents.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by ageing and poorly maintained buildings during monsoon season and the property owners should ensure structural safety of workplaces and residential premises to prevent untoward incidents during heavy downpour, he added.
