Lahore: Important progress has been made towards solving the long-standing water crisis in Lahore, where PC-1 of the city’s first surface water treatment plant has been approved
According to sources, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the project, while now it will be presented before ECNEC for final approval.
To review this progress, an important meeting was held under the chairmanship of Secretary Housing Noorul Amin Mengal, in which MD WASA Lahore Ghufran Ahmed informed about the progress made on the project so far.
Secretary Housing directed that all remaining stages of project approval should be completed as soon as possible so that practical work can be started on it.
It was briefed in the meeting that a modern surface water treatment plant with a daily capacity of 54 million gallons will be constructed on the BRB Canal. This project worth Rs 31 billion is being prepared according to the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, while its financial support will be provided with the support of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
Secretary Housing Noorul Amin Mengal said that for the first time in the history of Lahore, surface water is being made an alternative source to reduce dependence on groundwater.
This project will not only play an important role in protecting water resources but will also be helpful in stabilizing the groundwater level in the city, which is falling by 3 to 5 feet every year, he added.
He further said that this is an important and historic step towards a permanent solution to Lahore’s long-standing water problem under the leadership of the Chief Minister of Punjab.
