Sukkur: Director of the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Dr Raheem Bux Bhatti has ordered a complete review of fire safety arrangements at the institute in the wake of the recent incident at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad.
According to a press statement issued by the GIMS administration on Wednesday, Dr Bhatti has directed all concerned departments to ensure strict and effective implementation of fire safety standard operating procedures (SOPs).
He directed that no negligence in the implementation of fire safety SOPs would be tolerated, adding that hospitals were highly sensitive facilities where the safety of patients, attendants and medical staff must remain the top priority.
The director ordered that all firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers and hydrants, be kept in functional condition and inspected regularly. He further directed that emergency exits and evacuation routes be kept clear, properly marked and accessible at all times.
Dr Bhatti also directed the administration to conduct regular training of staff in fire safety, emergency evacuation and first response, and to keep a comprehensive emergency plan in place to minimize loss of life in case of any untoward incident.
He said pre emptive safety measures, trained staff and an effective emergency response plan were essential to deal with any emergency situation and that GIMS was committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient safety.
