Lahore:The Lahore High Court (LHC) decided 945 pending murder and capital sentence references involving death sentences and life imprisonment during the past 15 months as part of judicial reforms aimed at expediting the disposal of cases.

Under the special directives of Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum, the high court and subordinate judiciary across Punjab have been focusing on prompt and effective justice delivery through judicial reforms, modern case management and enhanced monitoring, says a press release issued here on Thursday.

According to official statistics, the Lahore High Court, including its principal seat in Lahore and allied benches in Multan, Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi, decided 897 murder references between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026.

During the same period, 48 capital sentence references involving death sentences and life imprisonment were also decided. These cases were filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, Control of Narcotic Substances Act, Anti-Rape Act and other serious criminal laws.

The disposal of a large number of murder and capital sentence references has been welcomed by lawyers and litigants.

The high court’s judicial reforms, modern case management system, proactive monitoring and emphasis on transparency had helped improve the efficiency of the justice system, reduce the backlog of pending cases and strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.
