Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the rehabilitation and improvement project of Jahangir Road from Gurumandir to Teen Hatti, completed at a cost of Rs 360 million.
Addressing the ceremony, the Mayor said that various development works had been completed under the project at a cost of Rs. 360 million, including road rehabilitation and widening, drainage, footpaths, lane marking and lighting arrangements.
He said that under the Jahangir Road rehabilitation project, the 1.4-kilometre-long two-way road had been widened from 26 feet to 32 feet. A total of 252,000 square feet of 80-mm paving blocks and 70,000 square feet of 60-mm paving blocks had been laid on the road. In addition, 50,000 square feet of asphalt base course and 50,000 square feet of asphalt concrete work had also been completed.
The Mayor said that the project included rehabilitation of the damaged sewerage lines along the road, while more than 11,800 running feet of trenching work had been completed for a 36-inch-diameter rainwater drainage line.
To further improve the drainage system, the sewerage lines had been connected to the Lyari River, while 45 manholes had also been constructed under the project.
The Mayor Karachi said that lane marking, kerb blocks and footpaths on both sides of Jahangir Road had also been completed. For beautification and lighting of the road, 80 new solar lights had been installed, while six damaged light poles had also been replaced.
Barrister Murtaza said that the primary purpose of his visit to Jahangir Road was to fulfil a promise made to the citizens. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation had reconstructed Jahangir Road, while its streetlights had been shifted to a solar-powered system. Millions of citizens using the road were now benefiting from the efforts of KMC.
He said that citizens who previously spent hours stuck in dust and difficult road conditions on Jahangir Road would now have better travelling facilities. He added that the streetlights on Jahangir Road had been converted to a solar system.
The Mayor said that millions of people travelling towards Sohrab Goth use this major thoroughfare and the rehabilitation of the road would make their commute easier.
He said that rehabilitation work on SM Taufiq Road had also been started, while work was underway on the road connecting Guru Mandir to Patel Para. Construction work on the Nishtar Road Flyover was also in progress. ‘We will fulfil the promises made to the people and continue the completion of development projects,’ he said.
He said that people belonging to different religions, including Muslims, Christians and Hindus, and people speaking different languages lived along Jahangir Road. ‘Karachi is a city for everyone, and the KMC is working for all citizens without discrimination,’ he said.
He said that KMC was going to develop 70 new parks in the city this year and that the scope of development works would be further expanded.
He said that the rehabilitation of roads and improvement of basic civic facilities in Karachi was continuing. Providing better transportation facilities to citizens and improving infrastructure remained among KMC’s priorities.
The ongoing development projects in the city are aimed at providing citizens with better, safer and more comfortable travelling facilities and further strengthening the basic civic infrastructure.
