Mirpur: President Mirpur District Bar Association Barrister Baber Ali Khan on Friday welcomed the resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly seeking restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the move reflected the aspirations of the people of the territory regarding their political identity and status.
In a statement, he said the resolution demonstrated the desire of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to retain their political identity and have a role in decisions concerning their future. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed the resolution on September 28, 2026, calling for the urgent restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory.
Baber Ali Khan said Jammu and Kashmir remained a disputed territory and maintained that United Nations Security Council resolutions provided for the right of its people to determine their future. He said the legal fraternity had consistently advocated the rule of law, judicial independence, human rights and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
The DBA president called upon the United Nations, international community, legal organisations and human rights bodies to play their role in promoting a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute and addressing human rights concerns in the territory. He said the District Bar Association Mirpur would continue its moral and legal support for what he described as the peaceful constitutional struggle of the Kashmiri people.
