Lahore: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab on Monday arrested a man allegedly involved in impersonating representatives of government institutions and senior officials to defraud people by promising official favours and appointments in exchange for money.
According to an NCCIA spokesperson, the action was taken by NCCIA Lahore on the special directions of Director NCCIA Punjab Muhammad Ali Waseem.
The suspect, identified as Faiz Ali Syed, was arrested in connection with FIR No. 171/2026.
The spokesperson said the suspect allegedly contacted officials of government and private institutions through multiple WhatsApp numbers while falsely claiming to represent prestigious state institutions.
He allegedly promised to get official work done or arrange facilities in government departments in return for money.
During the operation, the suspect was found using a private vehicle fitted with a fake green registration plate to create an impression of official status.
He had also allegedly kept another person dressed in a police uniform to reinforce the deception.
The NCCIA recovered three mobile phones from the suspect. Preliminary examination of the devices revealed WhatsApp chats, official-looking documents and other digital material allegedly linked to fraudulent activities.
Investigators said one of the WhatsApp accounts carried the label ‘Apex Court’, while chats indicated that the suspect had contacted officials by falsely claiming affiliation with an important state institution.
Several purported appointment and official letters bearing the suspect’s name were also recovered.
The documents allegedly contained claims of appointments to senior government positions.
Digital evidence also allegedly showed that the suspect had received money from various individuals on the pretext of facilitating their work in government departments.
The NCCIA spokesperson said investigations were underway into alleged offenses involving electronic fraud, forgery, impersonation of government institutions and other cyber-enabled crimes.
The seized mobile phones and other evidence have been sent for forensic examination, while further revelations were expected as the investigation progresses.
