Lahore: The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has decided to introduce a ‘beneficial plantation’ model across the city, under which only fruit-bearing, flowering and medicinal trees and plants will be promoted.

A five-member Horticulture Committee has been constituted on the directions of PHA Managing Director Ahmed Usman Javed to determine suitable plant species for future plantation activities across Lahore.

The committee comprises Zahid Iqbal, Farrukh Akhlaq, Abdullah Cheema, Gulzar Hussain and Shah Nawaz Watto. PHA Lahore’s horticulture directors have been included in the committee.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by PHA Additional Managing Director Tasleem Akhtar Rao, which was attended horticulture directors.

The meeting decided that all future plantation activities in Lahore would be carried out under the beneficial plantation policy. Under the new policy, every tree or plant selected for plantation must fulfill at least one of three criteria: it must be fruit-bearing, providing benefits to citizens and birds; flowering, contributing to the beauty of the city; or possess medicinal value, providing positive environmental and health benefits.

Addressing the meeting, Additional MD Tasleem Akhtar Rao said PHA was promoting plantation in line with the Punjab Chief Minister’s vision of a Green Punjab.

He said the plantation model would not only improve the environment but also provide tangible benefits to citizens.
