Karachi: The Sindh Government will launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in September, introduce 50 new double-decker buses in the metropolis in October, and progressively induct an additional 1, 000 EV buses into the public transport fleet by the end of the current year to modernize the public transport system in Sindh.
Alongside these measures, new routes of the People’s Bus Service from Larkana to Qambar and from Qambar to Shahdadkot will also be launched in the near future.
These decisions were taken during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon here on Tuesday.
It was also decided during the meeting to open a section of the mixed-traffic lane on University Road in Karachi to the public in September, with the aim of significantly improving traffic flow.
On the occasion, Sharjeel Inam Memon directed that all depots of the Red Line BRT project be completed as soon as possible in line with the stipulated timelines, and that the new routes of the People’s Bus Service from Larkana to Qambar and from Qambar to Shahdadkot be made operational without delay.
Addressing the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the Sindh Government’s EV taxi service would be inaugurated in September, while an additional 1, 000 electric buses would also be progressively integrated into the public transport network.
Sharjeel Memon said that 50 new double-decker buses would arrive in Karachi by October, offering citizens modern, high-quality, and comfortable travel facilities.
He further noted that opening a section of the mixed-traffic lane on University Road to the public in September would bring a marked improvement in traffic flow.
Sharjeel Inam Memon reaffirmed the Sindh Government’s commitment to continuing vigorous efforts to provide citizens with modern, safe, environmentally friendly, and reliable public transport facilities.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, CEO TransKarachi Zubair Channa, Project Director Yellow Line Kamal Dayo, and other relevant officials. Detailed briefings on various ongoing projects were also provided during the session.
