Karachi: Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) commenced Pakistan’s 80th Independence Day celebrations with a flag-hoisting ceremony and plantation drive at the university campus on Monday.
This series of activities to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day-spanning from August 1st to 14th, with great enthusiasm and national spirit, under the theme ‘Together for a Peaceful and Prosperous Pakistan. ‘
The event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of SMIU, Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, who unfurled the national flag atop the university’s historic main building in the presence of faculty members, officers, staff, and students. The ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by a plantation drive to promote environmental sustainability.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai said that Pakistan’s 80th Independence Day was a historic milestone that reminded the nation of the Pakistan Movement, and its heroes. He said that Independence Day was not merely a celebration but an opportunity to reflect on the responsibilities that came with freedom.
Dr. Sahrai stated that striving for Pakistan’s peace, progress and prosperity was a primary duty for us all. He noted that SMIU was organizing various events over a two-week period to mark Pakistan’s independence, with the fundamental aim of acquainting the new generation with the history of the country’s independence and involving them in the struggle for national progress and prosperity.
Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai stated that celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day with great enthusiasm was a significant duty and responsibility for Sindh Madressatul Islam University, particularly because the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and other prominent leaders of the Pakistan Movement, including Sir Abdullah Haroon, Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto, Khan Bahadur Muhammad Ayub Khuhro, Shaikh Abdul Majeed Sindhi, Sir Ghulam Hussain Hidayatullah, and others, received their early education at this very institution.
He directed the faculty, officers, other employees, and students of Sindh Madressatul Islam University to participate enthusiastically in the Pakistan Independence Day celebrations organized by SMIU.
Following the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor planted a sapling on the campus, reaffirming the university’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Faculty members, officers, employees, and students also participated in the plantation drive.
The plantation drive was organized by the Directorate of Student Affairs and Counselling as the inaugural activity of SMIU’s Independence Day celebrations.
