Karachi: The General Secretary of Pakistan People’s Party Sindh Chapter, Senator Waqar Mehdi, has expressed concern over the non-payment of salaries and pensions to employees of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) Karachi.
In a statement issued on Monday, the PPP Senator said that he had consistently raised the issues confronting employees of both Karachi campuses of the FUUAST in the Senate. He disclosed that he had written to the Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training, bringing the matter to her attention as well as that of the committee’s members.
In his letter, Mehdi pointed out that the delay in the payment of salaries and pensions had led the employees of both campuses to stage protests, affecting academic activities and the teaching process at the university. He highlighted that the University’s Senate and Syndicate have yet to be fully constituted.
Mehdi urged that all issues relating to the FUUAST be placed before the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training. He also called for the committee to be provided with the complete strength and details of the university’s teaching and non-teaching staff. He demanded that the committee be furnished with comprehensive details regarding the tenure of all members of the University’s Senate and Syndicate.
He reiterated that the timely payment of salaries and pensions is a fundamental right of employees and stressed that
effective measures can help address the situation and restore normal academic activities at the university.
