Mirpur: Tension that had persisted for nearly two months in Mirpur and several other districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has eased considerably, with routine life gradually returning to normal, residents and local sources said on Sunday.
Political activities had remained intense in two divisions of AJK during the recent general elections, with various political parties fielding candidates and mobilizing supporters, resulting in heightened political activity across several areas. With the gradual improvement in the situation, markets in cities and towns have started regaining their usual bustle, while commercial activities are also picking up, reducing uncertainty and anxiety among residents.
The restoration of banking services has provided further relief to the public, as major bank branches and ATM services at various locations have resumed operations. However, residents said the continued suspension of internet services remained a major concern, particularly for students, teachers, online businesses and people associated with other digital sectors. The disruption has affected educational activities, with students facing difficulties in attending online classes, accessing lectures and educational material and meeting other academic requirements.
Citizens, students, business representatives and civil society members urged the authorities to restore internet services immediately in view of the improving law and order situation. They said continued suspension was hampering education, freelancing, e-commerce, online services and other economic activities, causing financial and academic losses. Public circles called for the restoration of connectivity and other essential services to ensure the complete revival of educational, commercial and economic activities across AJK.
