Mayor Karachi announces expansion of Solar Street Lighting to more roads across Karachi


Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the expansion of the project to convert streetlights on the city’s major roads to solar energy and directed Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to commence work on important roads.



Following the positive results of the installation of solar lights on major roads, the scope of the project is being expanded, said a statement on Wednesday.



The Mayor Karachi said that converting streetlights on the city’s important roads to solar energy would not only help save electricity but also provide citizens with better and uninterrupted lighting facilities.



He said that KMC is promoting the use of alternative and environmentally friendly energy sources while keeping the city’s requirements in view.



He said that work on converting streetlights on Shahrah-e-Saadi to solar energy is progressing rapidly, while the installation of solar streetlights on more important and major roads across the city would also begin in the coming days.



The objective of the project is to provide better facilities to citizens while reducing energy-related expenses.



The Mayor Karachi directed the relevant departments of KMC to complete the installation of solar streetlights within the stipulated time-frame and to formulate a comprehensive plan for gradually converting other important roads of the city to solar energy.



He said that practical measures would continue to be taken to introduce a modern, environment friendly and sustainable system in Karachi.
