Peshawar: Authorities have opened the spillways of Tarbela Dam following a continuous rise in water inflows caused by recent monsoon rains and floodwaters from the upper districts.
According to officials on Monday, the decision was taken to manage the increasing water level at the reservoir. Following the opening of the spillways, the dam’s water discharge increased significantly from 22, 000 cusecs to 245, 000 cusecs.
In response to the rising flow in Indus River, the Haripur district administration has issued a public safety alert. Assistant Commissioner Ghazi, Junaid Aftab, urged residents to stay away from riverbanks and avoid unnecessary travel near the river.
The administration has also advised the public not to swim in the river, while boating and fishing have been discouraged. Parents have been asked to keep children away from the river and livestock owners have been instructed to move their animals to safer areas.
As a precautionary measure, announcements were made through local mosques before the spillways were opened to ensure residents were informed in time and could take necessary safety precautions.
